Jameos del Agua - Fundación César Manrique

Fulton están empezando a andar,
interpretando sus paseos desde la
estética posmoderna como obras de
arte, César Manrique está también
recorriendo Lanzarote,
interpretando la isla con ojos
estéticos. En estos paseos Manrique
no busca escenarios ni motivos para
sus cuadros, como haría un pintor
impresionista, sino que tal como
hacen los artistas del land art
contempla y se conciencia de las
cualidades de la isla y de sus
construcciones rurales, tal vez sin
pensar que lo que hace tenga
trascendencia alguna aunque, como
veremos, esta conceptualización se
verá reflejada en sus construcciones.
Esta conciencia del nuevo valor que
posee el paisaje le impulsa a recorrer
la isla con la cámara fotográfica, en
expresión suya “palpando y
estudiando” sus viviendas, es decir,
percibiendo por los sentidos y
analizando con el intelecto las
características de esas
construcciones.

tratado de arquitectura popular ni
un catálogo, en el sentido patrimonial
del término, sino un álbum de

as Richard Long and Hamish
Fulton were beginning to set to
work, interpreting their strolls in
nature as works of art from the
vantage of post-modern aesthetics,
César Manrique was also revisiting
all of Lanzarote, interpreting the
island with an aesthetic view. In
these strolls Manrique was not
seeking scenes or themes for his
paintings, as an impressionist
painter might, but rather like the
land artists, he turned his
observation into a heightened
awareness of the properties of the
island and its rural structures. He
may not have realized at the time
that what he was doing had any
importance at all, although as
discussed below, this attitude was
to be reflected in his later
construction projects. His new
awareness of the value of the
landscape drove him to visit the
entire island, camera in hand, in
his own words “touching and
studying” its dwellings, i.e., using
his senses to perceive and his
intellect to analyze their
characteristics.

Ende der sechziger Jahre, zu der
Zeit als Richard Long und Hamish
Fulton begannen, Wanderungen zu
machen und diese aus der Sicht der
postmodernen Ästhetik als Kunstwerke
auszulegen, streifte César Manrique
durch Lanzarote und interpretierte die
Insel mit ästhetischen Augen. Auf
diesen Spaziergängen suchte Manrique
weder Bühnenbilder noch Motive für
seine Bilder, so wie es ein
impressionistischer Maler tun würde,
sondern er beobachtete – wie die
Künstler der Land Art – und wurde
sich der Qualitäten der Insel und ihrer
ländlichen Bauten bewusst, vielleicht
ohne zu denken, dass das, was er tat,
irgendeine Bedeutung hatte, obwohl
diese Konzeptualisierung sich in seinen
Werken widerspiegeln sollte, worauf
später noch eingegangen wird. Dieses
neue Bewusstsein des Wertes der
Landschaft trieb ihn dazu, die Insel
mit der Fotokamera zu durchkreuzen,
oder, in seinen Worten, ihre Häuser zu
„fühlen und zu studieren“, das heißt,
sie mit den Sinnen wahrzunehmen und
mit seinem Verstand die
Charakteristika dieser Bauten zu
analysieren.
