In a nutshell, pop culture
furnished César Manrique with the
aesthetic media and plastic
mechanisms to make a wonder of
nature accessible to the public at
large while creating a work of
ingenious art. The everyday items
he installed, such as the counter in
the bar, the chairs, lamps, awning
and pool, are viewed for what they
are, functional elements: a place to
have a drink, something to sit on,
a source of light, protection from
the sun or a spot to swim. But they
are also elements of an ensemble
that contribute to the environment
as a whole, that do not call for the
same sort of minute examination as
the tables, chairs, lamps and
drapes of a restored Rococo sitting
room, for instance, on exhibit in a
museum.
The greatest contribution made
by Jameos del Agua to the world of
art, however, lies in the felicitous
attempt to transform a natural
element into an artistic enterprise.
Working on a scale and with
dimensions much greater than
those of normal objects, the artist
rose to the challenge of dealing
