paisaje, recobrando conceptos de la
estética del siglo XVIII, como son el
concepto de lo sublime y la teoría de
lo pintoresco que se hace
particularmente explícita en las
obras de Robert Smithson, Richard
Long y Hamish Fulton.
El crítico de arte Robert Hobbs
califica a Smithson como “el gran
redescubridor de lo pintoresco” y,
ciertamente, fue uno de los primeros
artistas que en la posmodernidad se
sirvieron nuevamente de las
cualidades de esa categoría para salir
de su etapa minimalista y acercarse
al mundo de las rugosas y ásperas
formas de la naturaleza. Sin
embargo, César Manrique, una
docena de años antes que Smithson,
supo ver el valor plástico de los
juegos de texturas y, en fecha muy
temprana, las llevó a la superficie del
lienzo, realizando una pintura
calificada de matérica, reconociendo,
después, estas cualidades en el
territorio, cuando trabajó en las
grandes obras con la naturaleza
como, por ejemplo, en los Jameos del
Agua, donde aprovechó las
cualidades rugosas de las rocas.
as the concept of the sublime and
the theory of the picturesque,
particularly explicit in works
authored by Robert Smithson,
Richard Long and Hamish Fulton.
Art critic Robert Hobbs called
Smithson the “great rediscoverer of
the picturesque” and he was,
certainly, one of the first postmodern
artists to make new use of
the properties of that category in
his move from minimalism to the
harsh and rugged forms of nature.
But a dozen or so years before
Smithson, César Manrique had
understood the plastic value of the
combinations of textures and from
a very early date had brought that
understanding to the surface of his
canvases, doing what would be
called “matter” painting. Later,
when he worked with nature in
very large-scale works such as
Jameos del Agua, he recognized
these same properties in the land,
using the ruggedness of the rocks
to enormous advantage.
There is yet another parallel,
very likely not coincidental,
between the evolution of César
114
aufgegriffen, wie zum Beispiel das
Konzept des Sublimen und die Theorie
des Pittoresken, die besonders in den
Kunstwerken von Robert Smithson,
Richard Long und Hamish Fulton
deutlich werden.
Der Kunstkritiker Robert Hobbs
bezeichnet Smithson als „den großen
Wiederentdecker des Pittoresken“. Es
ist wahr, dass er einer der ersten
Künstler war, die in der Postmoderne
erneut die Merkmale dieser Kategorie
aufgriffen, um ihre minimalistische
Etappe zu überwinden und sich den
zerklüfteten und rauen Formen der
Natur zu nähern. César Manrique
hatte jedoch zwölf Jahre vor Smithson
den plastischen Wert der
Kombinationen der Texturen erkannt
und diese schon sehr früh auf die
Leinwand gebracht, indem er
„Materialbilder“ anfertigte. Danach
übertrug er diese Merkmale auch auf
das Gelände, als er an den großen
Kunstwerken in der Natur arbeitete,
wie zum Beispiel bei den Jameos del
Agua, wo er die Unebenheit der Felsen
vorteilhaft nutzte.
Vielleicht gibt es noch eine andere,
wahrscheinlich nicht zufällige Parallele
