DZNE Day – 27 November 2009
German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE)
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
disease are the scourge of an ageing society. To
investigate them is the task of the “German Centre for Neurodegenerative
Diseases (DZNE)”, recently established under
the umbrella of the Helmholtz Association, which the
DGPPN would like to introduce at the congress.
Dr. Pierluigi Nicotera is the Institute’s founding director. As
head of the Medical Research Council’s Toxicology Unit in
England since 2001, the 53-year old Italian has been investigating
the molecular mechanisms which lead to the deterioration
of nerve cells. Following several years at the Karolinska
Institute in Stockholm, Nicotera had already headed
the Molecular Toxicology Department at the University of
Constance from 1998 to 2000.
Main Symposium
Translational research in dementia: From bench to bedside
Blood and CSF based biomarkers for the early diagnosis of dementias
Speaker: Jens Wiltfang (Essen, Germany)
The DZNE is unique in two ways: on one hand it is not restricted
to one site but is made up of a network – the key
centre being in Bonn and for the time being six highly efficient
partner sites in Rostock / Greifswald, Magdeburg, Göttingen,
Witten-Herdecke, Tübingen and Munich. As a result,
research at the DZNE is carried out on the basis of worksharing
with each site concentrating on it specific strengths
with a common goal in sight: Understanding disease processes
more accurately, improving prevention and therapy,
as well as helping patients and family members to a higher
quality of life. What is more, the DZNE is not limited to basic
research but also focuses on translation, that is on transferring
this research into therapeutic practice.
