DGPPN – German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy<br />
Much more than just your host at the DGPPN Congress 2009<br />
The DGPPN is a scientifi c association. It was founded <strong>in</strong> 1842<br />
and now has almost 5,000 members. As a result, it is the<br />
largest and oldest scientifi c association of all those work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Germany <strong>in</strong> the fi elds of psychiatry, psychotherapy and<br />
neurology.<br />
The aim of the DGPPN is to <strong>in</strong>form and educate about the<br />
causes of mental disorders and to improve diagnosis, therapy<br />
and prevention. As such it seeks to optimise the care of<br />
people with mental illnesses. As members of the DGPPN,<br />
our vision is that of a society <strong>in</strong> which people with mental<br />
ill nesses can live without prejudice, <strong>in</strong> which people with<br />
mental illnesses receive the care which is right for them and<br />
all the help they need, and <strong>in</strong> which the best possible, scientifi<br />
cally substantiated and medically <strong>in</strong>dividualised, psychological<br />
and social assistance is available at all times and <strong>in</strong><br />
all places for all people with mental illnesses. For this reason,<br />
one of our aims is also to improve the care situation and<br />
the position of people with mental illnesses <strong>in</strong> society.<br />
What tasks do we set ourselves?<br />
n Promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>to the basics of mental disorders<br />
and improv<strong>in</strong>g diagnosis and therapy<br />
n Promot<strong>in</strong>g the prevention of mental disorders and improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the care situation for people with mental illnesses<br />
n Support<strong>in</strong>g those affected and family members of people<br />
with mental illnesses<br />
n Promot<strong>in</strong>g psychiatric and psychotherapeutic tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />
advanced tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and professional development<br />
n Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the profi le of psychiatry and psychotherapy as<br />
a specialist fi eld<br />
n Issu<strong>in</strong>g evidencebased guidel<strong>in</strong>es and scientifi c op<strong>in</strong>ions<br />
n Advis<strong>in</strong>g politics and society <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
