UNIT 1—Prejudice and Discrimination<br />

BRIEF SUMMARY OF UNIT: Hate is the root cause of genocide. Research into the<br />

phenomenon of modern genocide has shown that hate escalates through a series of emotions and actions<br />

which can lead to the fi nal act of genocide. Beginning with prejudice and stereotyping, discrimination, bigotry,<br />

and scapegoating, hate progresses to acts of violence which can become state sponsored atrocities, massacres<br />

and ultimately genocide.<br />

Standard 6.2.12.A.4.c Analyze the motivations, causes, and consequences of the<br />

genocides of Armenians, Roma (gypsies), and Jews, as well as<br />

the mass exterminations of Ukrainians and Chinese.<br />

Standard 6.2.12.A.5.e Assess the progress of human and civil rights around the<br />

world since the 1948 U.N. Declaration of Human Rights.<br />

Standard 6.2.12.D.4.i Compare and contrast the actions of individuals as<br />

perpetrators, bystanders, and rescuers during events of<br />

persecution or genocide, and describe the long-term<br />

consequences of genocide for all involved.<br />

Standard 8.1.8.E.1 Gather and analyze fi ndings using data collection technology<br />

to produce a possible solution for a content-related or real-<br />

world problem.<br />

Standard 8.2.8.C.2 Compare and contrast current and past incidences of ethical<br />

and unethical use of labor in the United States or another<br />

country and present results in a media-rich presentation.<br />
