Gao Longsheng, “‘De’ bu gu, bi you lin.” The<br />

original quote from Analects (IV. 25) means<br />

“Virtue never dwells in solitude, it will always<br />

attract neighbors.” Here, however, the term de<br />

stands for “Germany” (Deguo) rather than<br />

the original “virtue” (de). The cartoon depicts<br />

Hitler holding a head labeled “Austria.” The<br />

characters on the skull held by a Japanese<br />

general read, “Puppet organization.”<br />

Individually students should write down what they think the cartoon means. Then they should<br />

meet in groups of three or four, sharing their ideas. Finally a group spokesperson should<br />

report the group’s main idea to the class.<br />
