Gao Longsheng, “‘De’ bu gu, bi you lin.” The
original quote from Analects (IV. 25) means
“Virtue never dwells in solitude, it will always
attract neighbors.” Here, however, the term de
stands for “Germany” (Deguo) rather than
the original “virtue” (de). The cartoon depicts
Hitler holding a head labeled “Austria.” The
characters on the skull held by a Japanese
general read, “Puppet organization.”

Individually students should write down what they think the cartoon means. Then they should
meet in groups of three or four, sharing their ideas. Finally a group spokesperson should
report the group’s main idea to the class.
