<strong>The</strong>ir moral and economy<br />

Most perfectly <strong>the</strong>y made agree:<br />

Each virtue kept its proper bound,<br />

Nor trespass'd on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r's ground,<br />

Nor fame, nor censure <strong>the</strong>y regarded;<br />

<strong>The</strong>y nei<strong>the</strong>r punish'd nor rewarded.<br />

He cared not what <strong>the</strong> footman did;<br />

Her maids she nei<strong>the</strong>r prais'd nor chid;<br />

So every servant took his course;<br />

And bad at first, <strong>the</strong>y all grew worse.<br />

Slothful disorder filled his table;<br />

And sluttish plenty deck'd her table.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir beer was strong; <strong>the</strong>ir wine was port;<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir meal was large; <strong>the</strong>ir grace was short.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y gave <strong>the</strong> poor <strong>the</strong> remnant meat,<br />

Just when it grew not fit to eat.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y paid <strong>the</strong> church and parish rate;<br />

And took, but read not <strong>the</strong> receipt:<br />

For which <strong>the</strong>y claim <strong>the</strong>ir Sunday's due,<br />

Of slumbering in an upper pew.<br />

No man's defects sought <strong>the</strong>y to know;<br />

So never made <strong>the</strong>mselves a foe,<br />

No man's good deeds did <strong>the</strong>y commend;<br />

So never rais'd <strong>the</strong>mselves a friend.<br />

Nor cherish'd <strong>the</strong>y relations poor;<br />

That might decrease <strong>the</strong>ir present store:<br />

Nor barn nor house did <strong>the</strong>y repair;<br />

That might oblige <strong>the</strong>ir future heir.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y nei<strong>the</strong>r added nor confounded;<br />

<strong>The</strong>y nei<strong>the</strong>r wanted nor abounded.<br />

Each Christmas <strong>the</strong>y accompts did clear,<br />

And wound <strong>the</strong>ir bottom round <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Nor tear or smile did <strong>the</strong>y employ<br />

At news <strong>of</strong> public grief or joy.<br />

When bells were rung, and bonfires made,<br />

If ask'd <strong>the</strong>y ne'er denied <strong>the</strong>ir aid;<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir jug was to <strong>the</strong> ringers carried,<br />

Whoever ei<strong>the</strong>r died, or married.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir billet at <strong>the</strong> fire was found,<br />

Whoever was depos'd, or crown'd.<br />

Nor good, nor bad, nor fools, nor wise;
