for all practice and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g conditions. Six blocks <strong>of</strong> 24 experimental trials were<br />

presented <strong>in</strong> each post-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period. Reaction times for <strong>the</strong> post-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period were<br />

measured. It was hypo<strong>the</strong>sized that participants who practiced group<strong>in</strong>g by a particular<br />

scale would be faster to group by that scale <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> post-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period when compared<br />

with those who were asked to group by an alternative scale.<br />

Results and discussion<br />

Sixty-one participants volunteered to participate <strong>in</strong> Experiment 3. I omitted <strong>the</strong><br />

data from one participant from <strong>the</strong> global to local condition because her reaction times<br />

were more than three standard deviations above <strong>the</strong> group mean. <strong>The</strong> 60 rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

participants ranged <strong>in</strong> age from 18 to 45 with a mean <strong>of</strong> 20.6. Four males and 56 females<br />

participated. A 2X2 between participants ANOVA (Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g size scale X Test size scale)<br />
