human <strong>in</strong>teractions with <strong>the</strong>se types <strong>of</strong> displays could be enhanced by an understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> human perception <strong>of</strong> global and local Gestalt group<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, it is important to note that <strong>the</strong> reported experiments have served to detail<br />

<strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> one task factor, process<strong>in</strong>g time, on global and local perceptual group<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong>re may very well be <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r task factors, like attention and<br />

distractions. <strong>The</strong>se task factors should also be carefully considered with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong><br />

user <strong>in</strong>terface displays.<br />

Overall summary<br />

Across a series <strong>of</strong> experiments, <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> global and local perceptual group<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was exam<strong>in</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> user <strong>in</strong>terface displays. Three pilot studies revealed<br />

that global group<strong>in</strong>g was more salient <strong>in</strong> short stimulus durations when compared to<br />

longer stimulus durations. <strong>The</strong> reported dissertation experiments showed that global<br />

group<strong>in</strong>g was more salient overall and more usable for speeded tasks.<br />

<strong>The</strong> reported results contribute to our understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> how to better design user<br />

<strong>in</strong>terface displays. <strong>The</strong> application <strong>the</strong>se f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs to user <strong>in</strong>terface design may enhance<br />

our ability to perceive and comprehend <strong>in</strong>formation presented on computerized displays.<br />

This application may improve our accuracy <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with computerized systems,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> speed <strong>in</strong> which we perform computer related tasks. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong><br />

application <strong>the</strong>se results may <strong>in</strong>crease productivity <strong>in</strong> many types <strong>of</strong> work environments<br />

that rely on computers and ease <strong>in</strong>teractions with computerized devices used for personal<br />

activities, such as cell phones and PDAs. <strong>The</strong> reported results also are important with<strong>in</strong><br />
