<strong>in</strong>terpretation should match <strong>the</strong> shape <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oppos<strong>in</strong>g columns <strong>of</strong> circles. If participants<br />

grouped <strong>the</strong> central circles by similarity <strong>of</strong> complete shape, <strong>the</strong>y would group <strong>the</strong> central<br />

circles with <strong>the</strong>se oppos<strong>in</strong>g columns. In Figure 17A, for example, <strong>the</strong> central circles<br />

group by complete shape with <strong>the</strong> columns <strong>of</strong> shapes on <strong>the</strong> right.<br />

Figure 17. Ambiguous shape group<strong>in</strong>g stimuli and results<br />

Note. (a) Experimental stimulus, Schulz (2001). Central column <strong>of</strong> shapes matches <strong>in</strong>complete shape <strong>of</strong> columns <strong>of</strong> left<br />

and complete shape <strong>of</strong> columns on right. (b) Mean percent <strong>of</strong> group<strong>in</strong>g by complete shape across time.<br />

<strong>The</strong> mean percentages <strong>of</strong> group<strong>in</strong>g experimental stimuli by complete shape, for<br />

each stimulus duration, are plotted <strong>in</strong> Figure 17B. Group<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>in</strong>complete shape was<br />

predom<strong>in</strong>ant at <strong>the</strong> shortest exposure time (58% <strong>in</strong>complete shape, 42% complete shape<br />

at 200ms). At <strong>the</strong> longest exposure time, however, group<strong>in</strong>g switched to occur<br />

predom<strong>in</strong>antly by complete shape (25% <strong>in</strong>complete, 75% complete). <strong>The</strong>se results<br />

suggest that group<strong>in</strong>g can beg<strong>in</strong> by <strong>in</strong>complete shape and <strong>the</strong>n switch to occur by<br />

complete shape as exposure time <strong>in</strong>creases.<br />
