<strong>in</strong> user <strong>in</strong>terface display layouts.<br />

It would be <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to determ<strong>in</strong>e whe<strong>the</strong>r group<strong>in</strong>g operates differentially<br />

across time <strong>in</strong> user <strong>in</strong>terface displays because display layouts are <strong>of</strong>ten ambiguous with<br />

respect to organization. For example, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> website shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 18, <strong>the</strong>re are a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> group<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples that can affect <strong>the</strong> users’ perception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

navigational pushbuttons. If organiz<strong>in</strong>g by similarity and common region, <strong>the</strong> user may<br />

perceive <strong>the</strong> pushbuttons to form one large group, as <strong>the</strong> pushbuttons are all depicted <strong>in</strong> a<br />

similar pattern and are all located on one common dark region. If organiz<strong>in</strong>g by<br />

alignment, <strong>the</strong> user may perceive <strong>the</strong> pushbuttons to form two groups, one group <strong>in</strong> a top<br />

row and a second group <strong>in</strong> a bottom row, as <strong>the</strong> pushbuttons appear to be aligned <strong>in</strong> two<br />

rows. If organiz<strong>in</strong>g by proximity, <strong>the</strong> user may group <strong>the</strong> bottom central pushbutton and<br />

<strong>the</strong> ‘Email Webmaster’ l<strong>in</strong>k. Hence, <strong>the</strong> pushbuttons <strong>in</strong> Figure 18 are ambiguous with<br />

respect to group<strong>in</strong>g. While this website serves as one example, <strong>the</strong>re are countless o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> ambiguous display group<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> both s<strong>of</strong>tware applications and websites.<br />
