The distribution of data from each condition in Experiment 1 was tested for normality using a Shapiro-Wilk test. This test was selected because it was designed to test the normality of a distribution for researchers who are concerned about whether the skew of a distribution will affect statistical inferences. While each of the four distributions are skewed, the Shapiro-Wilk test of normality indicates that these distributions do not differ significantly from a normal distribution, all p > .05. For this reason, it is appropriate to make inferences on the data by using an ANOVA. 83
