Figure 9. Flight status display with ambiguous group<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Note. In each <strong>in</strong>terface, text groups by <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> color similarity with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Status’ and ‘Measure’ columns.<br />

However, text also groups by alignment with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Current’ and ‘Recommended’ rows.<br />

<strong>The</strong> designer <strong>in</strong> our example has grouped <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> each display by <strong>the</strong><br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> alignment and color similarity (see Figure 9). Group<strong>in</strong>g by color similarity<br />

is used to show difference between <strong>the</strong> ‘Status’ and ‘Measure’ categories <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Group<strong>in</strong>g by alignment is used to show <strong>the</strong> difference between <strong>the</strong> ‘Current’ and<br />

‘Recommended’ categories. Recall that <strong>the</strong> pilot’s task is to locate <strong>the</strong> ‘Current’<br />

measurement <strong>of</strong> altitude and speed before mak<strong>in</strong>g a decision about land<strong>in</strong>g. If <strong>the</strong> pilot<br />

groups <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation by alignment, she will likely f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> ‘Current’ status <strong>of</strong> both<br />

altitude and speed very quickly. However, <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pilots’ task requires her to<br />

saccade across <strong>the</strong> displays very rapidly. In <strong>the</strong>se conditions, is <strong>the</strong> designers’ <strong>in</strong>tended<br />

group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation perceived? If so, is one group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terpretation more salient than<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r? If <strong>the</strong> alignment group<strong>in</strong>g were most salient <strong>in</strong> limited exposure conditions,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> pilot would locate <strong>the</strong> relevant <strong>in</strong>formation very efficiently. However, if color<br />

group<strong>in</strong>g where <strong>the</strong> most salient <strong>in</strong> limited exposure conditions, <strong>the</strong> scene would appear<br />

to be grouped by ‘Status’ and ‘Measure’ categories. In this case, <strong>the</strong> group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>formation would not help <strong>the</strong> user discrim<strong>in</strong>ate between ‘Current’ and ‘Recommended’<br />
