1816 Aug 1 Letter from J.C. in East Bergholt to Maria in Putney: "It is my<br />

intention to be in London on Saturday, about the middle of<br />

the day. . . . It is a lovely afternoon and the fair is really very<br />

pretty." (JCC II, p. 190; see also JCC VI, p. 28)<br />

1816 Aug 3 To London. (JCC I, p. 137)<br />

1816 Aug 10 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called on me & spoke of the<br />

death of his Uncle David Pike Watts of Portland Place who<br />

died on Monday, July 29th. . . . Mrs. Russell, His only surviving<br />

child inherits His fortune." (Farington XIV, p. 4869; see also<br />

JCC IV, p. 46)<br />

1816 Aug 12 To East Bergholt. Uncle David Pike Watts had died 29 July,<br />

without leaving much in his will to J.C., who "took it<br />

philosophically, but the announcement must have come as a<br />

blow, at a time when money was so badly needed." (JCC I,<br />

pp. 137-38)<br />

1816 Aug 13 Letter from J.C. in East Bergholt to Maria in Putney Heath: "I<br />

was not able to leave London after I saw you 'till Monday, aas<br />

I found a picture belonging to a gentleman that was sent to<br />

me for some repair." Sends Gessner's The Letters of Gessner
