1817 Nov 3 Farington records: "Royal Academy Election of Associates<br />

took place this evening, but I did not go in consequence of<br />

my indisposition.<br />

"Present at the meeting. Mr. West. Dance—Fuseli—<br />

Smirke—Stothard—Lawrence—Beechey—Shee—Flaxman—<br />

Rossi—Owen—Philips—Calcott—Wilkie—Ward—Westmacott—<br />

Smirke Junr.—Bone—Reinagle—Theed—Dawe—Bigg—<br />

Mulready—Jackson—Chalon." Farington includes list of<br />

candidates and number of votes for each. J.C. receives<br />

three votes on the first ballot, and five on the final first<br />

ballot, which is won by Bailey. J.C. then receives five votes<br />

on the second ballot, and eight on the final second ballot,<br />

which is won by A. Cooper. (Farington XIV, pp. 5095-96; see<br />
