1816 Sept 22 Letter from J.C. in East Bergholt to Maria in Putney Heath: "I<br />

am importuned again for the portrait of the old clergyman<br />

who is declining fast—if I could give them one or two days it<br />

wants to secure the head, & oblige them very much, & secure<br />

the portrait in future. . . . It is my intention to be with you on<br />

Friday or Saturday—the smallest hint from you to come<br />

sooner will be obeyed in an instant, for I should not hesitate<br />

about relinquishing the portrait." (JCC II, p. 209; see also JCC<br />

Suffolk yesterday for the purpose of being married to Miss<br />

Bicknell, eldest daughter of Mr. Bicknell, Solicitor to the<br />

Admiralty, &c. in a few days by his friend the Revd. <strong>John</strong><br />

Fisher, nephew to the Bishop of Salisbury, who was lately<br />

married to the eldest daugr. of Dr. Cookson, Canon of<br />

Windsor.—He has a living in Dorsetshire, & <strong>Constable</strong> read me<br />

a letter recd. from Him warmly inviting <strong>Constable</strong> to go<br />

immediately after the marriage to make some stay with Him<br />

in Dorsetshire, which He intends to do.—<strong>Constable</strong> read a
