1823 Oct 23 Letter from <strong>John</strong> Fisher in Salisbury to J.C. at Coleorton Hall:<br />

"I have told Tinney that you only want to tone the picture<br />

down: & that you will not alter a line or leaf without<br />

consulting him." (JCC VI, pp. 141-42)<br />

1823 Oct 27 Letter from J.C. in Leicestershire to Maria in Hampstead: "I<br />

shall make a few sketches on the ground, & I [have] done a<br />

little one from the window. Sir G. has kindly allowed me to<br />

make a study of a little Claude, a Grove—probably done on<br />

the spot. . . . Do not expect me this week. . . . Every step<br />

from this door is a picture—the garden is beyond all<br />

description, rocks, ruins, the Church, the house, the mountain<br />

&c &c." (JCC II, pp. 291-93; see also JC: FDC, p. 147 and JCC<br />

1823 Drawing, inscribed on back: 'Leicestershire—the lane leading<br />

late Oct - Nov to Ferrers Hall, Lord Ferrers' house. I was on horseback with<br />

Sir G.B. who kindly held my horse while I made this sketch. I<br />

think it was the finest ash I ever saw.' Three copies of<br />

Beaumont's own drawings were made by <strong>Constable</strong> during his<br />

stay at Coleorton. One was of a sketch which Sir George had<br />

made in 1790 in East Bergholt. The other copies are known<br />

as Mill on River and Caister Castle, Norfolk. (JCC II, p. 291)<br />

1823 "Leslie says that <strong>Constable</strong> made a large sketch of the front<br />

late Oct-Nov of the house" at Leicestershire. (JCC II, p. 298)<br />

1823 after Oct Letter from J.C. in London to Frank Collins in London. (JCC IV,<br />

p. 67)<br />

1823 Nov 2 Letter, dated wrongly by J.C. 2nd October, from J.C. in<br />

Leicestershire to Maria in London: "I have finished a beautifull<br />

copy of the little Claude—a sunset. . . . I have begun another<br />

which I hope to complete this week, the little Grove. . . . I<br />

hope my stay will not surpass this week." (JCC II, pp. 293-94;<br />
