1826 Jan ca. 18 Letter, probably written 18 January, from J.C. in London to<br />

Maria in Brighton: "I had many callers all day, Henry B[icknell]<br />

and I shall begin his picture tomorrow at 2. . . . Sir Thomas<br />

Lawrence. . . . called to see what I was about—I showed him<br />

all—but he wanted (& I think he came on purpose) to see the<br />

large picture. I never saw him admire anything of mine so<br />

much—he said it was admirable especially to the left—not<br />

but the line of the bridge was grand—&c &c—&c. He was<br />

struck on looking at the mantel peice at the portrait of<br />

papa—he said how very like & how very well." (JCC II, pp.<br />

1826 Feb 1 Letter from J.C. in London to <strong>John</strong> Fisher: "Mr. Mirehouse<br />

sent for the 'Cathedrum' . . .it is wholly a new picture and<br />

very pretty. . . . I am greatly distressed for a sketch book or<br />

two in your possession—I hope you have a large one & two<br />

small ones. The title papers of the small ones are—the Bridge<br />

at Oxford—& the shoar opposite Gravesend or Woolwich.<br />

<strong>John</strong> Dunthorne has taken my place at the easil while I hasten<br />

to write to you—all this morning I have been engaged with a<br />

1826 Feb 5 Letter from <strong>John</strong> Fisher in Osmington to J.C. in London: "I<br />

shall be at Salisbury for some days at the end of this month. I<br />

should like to much to have Perne's Mill there to look at. You<br />

will never procure Tinneys picture in London either to copy or<br />

to exhibit. You must come & pay me a visit in the summer on<br />

purpose to copy it." (JCC VI, pp. 214-216)<br />

for the first vacancy, which goes to Leslie, and one vote for<br />
