1817 A plan prepared in 1817 to show the result of the award [of<br />

partition of East Bergholt common land]. (JCC I, p. 131)<br />

1818 Sends two pictures to British Institution, "both of which had<br />

beg. of year presumably appeared in last year's Academy exhibition," one<br />

called Scene on the banks of a river, later known asFlatford<br />

Mill, the other A Cottage in a Cornfield. (JCC II, p. 233)<br />

1818 Jan 31 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> I called on and saw Him and His<br />

wife & sat with them sometime. He spoke of Bigg as being in<br />

a bad state of Health & much altered. I saw several of His<br />

painted sketches and drawings done last Summer, but He had<br />

not any principal work in hand." (Farington XV, pp. 5147-48;<br />

1818 Feb 17 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called. . . . Mrs. Russell,<br />

daughtr. to the late David Pike Watts, has ordered a<br />

Monument to His Memory to be executed by Chantrey: The<br />

Price fixed is £5000." (Farington XV, pp. 5159-60; see also<br />

1818 Feb 19 Letter from Henry Greswolde Lewis at Malvern Hall to J.C. in<br />

London suggesting J.C. and Maria spend a month in summer<br />

or autumn with him and J.C. at the same time assist in the<br />

decoration of the house by painting a panel with the figure of<br />

a Norman ancestor. Received on Feb 21. (JCC IV, p. 57; see<br />

1818 March 18 Farington records: "I had company at dinner." Diagram of<br />

seating arrangement shows Farington at the head of the<br />

table with, clockwise from his left, <strong>Constable</strong>, Newton, Wm.<br />

Jas. Farington, S. Lane, and Thomson. Discusses various<br />
