1816 Sept 15 Letter from J.C. in East Bergholt to Maria in Putney Heath: "I<br />

had just received a letter requesting me to paint the portrait<br />

of one old clergyman and another and to commence upon<br />

them immediately—and as I must be at General Rebow's on<br />

Tuesday to finish there, as well as compleat a little<br />

commission here. . . . I have declined the portraits, and one of<br />

the paintings for the General, & shall work as fast as I can<br />

quite welcome to the print of Miss O'Neil—& if he would like<br />

the larger one it is quite at his service. . . . Mr. Driffeild drove<br />

me over this morning from the General's. . . . He is full of<br />

affection for us, and had made me promise for you that we<br />

will come & stay a week with him before X'mas at Feering<br />

parsonage near Colchester." (JCC II, p. 206)<br />

1816 Sept 20 Receives letter from <strong>John</strong> Fisher, mentioning 1 October as a<br />

suitable date for the wedding. (JCC VI, p. 30)<br />

1816 Sept 20 Letter from J.C. in East Bergholt to Maria in Putney Heath,<br />

mentioning a letter from <strong>John</strong> Fisher, who 'hopes the Bishop<br />

will sit to me for his picture in consequence of mine. It will do<br />

you a world of credit.' and says: "I am going out on Tuesday,<br />

& I hope to be with you on Friday or Saturday next." (JCC II,<br />

p. 208)
