1817 May 18 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> & Mrs. <strong>Constable</strong> came to tea<br />

with us." (Farington XIV, pp. 5020-21; see also JCC II, p.<br />

1817 May 19 Farington records: "Sir Thos. Lawrence called in the evng. & I<br />

informed of <strong>Constable</strong>'s communication of Mr. Jackson<br />

wishing to dispose of a pair of pictures viz: The King &<br />

1817 May 20 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called in the evening, & I told<br />

Him I had communicated to Sir T. Lawrence what He had said<br />

respecting Mr. Jackson's wish to dispose of the pictures of<br />

the King & Queen, & recommended to Him to speak to Sir<br />

T.L. on the subject.<br />

"He had been to the British Institution Exhibition of the<br />

works of deceased British Artists,—the private view this day,<br />

and thought it very respectable." (Farington XIV, p. 5021;<br />

1817 May 21 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called; He was at the British<br />

Institution eving. Exhibition last night which was very<br />

crowded. . . . The general opinion seemd to be in favour of<br />

the Exhibition.—Ten Academicians were there." (Farington<br />

1817 May 24 Farington mentions <strong>Constable</strong>. (Farington XIV, p. 5023)<br />

1817 May 28 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called in the evening and<br />

requested my opinion whether it would be adviseable for Him<br />

to take the House in Upper Charlotte st. now to be let upon<br />

which He wd. be required to expend abt. £120 & to pay £50<br />

good will for a lease of 10 years,—the Annual Rent £73-10-0<br />

& the Taxes £36 or to take a house upon a smaller scale. I<br />

strongly recommended the latter. He sd. Mr. Bicknell had<br />

expressed to Mrs. <strong>Constable</strong> that He wd. from Christmas last<br />

allow Her £50 pr. annm. & that a Legacy of £225 wd. be paid<br />

to Her next week, which wd. be a floating sum for
