1803 May 17 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called.—Had been to the<br />

Exhibition, thinks Portraits prevail too much.—That Turner<br />

becomes more and more extravagant and less attentive to<br />

nature. His views in Switzerland fine subjects but treated in<br />

such a way that the objects appear as if made of some brittle<br />

material." (Farington VI, p. 2031)<br />

pictures on board painted by Gaspar Poussin—price 15 gs. &<br />

8 gs." (Farington VI, p. 2032)<br />

1803 May 21 Farington records: "I went with him [<strong>Constable</strong>] to Reinagle's<br />

Junr. to see several small pictures by Gaspar Poussin which<br />

were cut from an Organ Case." Discussion between J.C. and<br />

younger artists, including Thomas Phillips, about Turner.<br />

1803 May 23 Letter from J.C. in London to Dunthorne, Sr.: "I was near a<br />

month on board, and was much employed in making drawings<br />

of ships in all situation. . . . When the ship was at Gravesend, I<br />

took a walk on shore to Rochester and Chatham. . . . At<br />

Chatham I hired a boat to see the men of war. I sketched the<br />

"Victory' in three views. . . . On my return to Rochester, I<br />

made a drawing of the Cathedral. . . . I joined the ship again<br />

at Gravesend, and we proceeded on our voyage. . . . I came<br />

on shore at Deal, walked to Dover, and the next day returned<br />

to London. . . . I . . . have made a few little purchases—<br />

twelve prints by Waterloo, and four fine drawings by him,<br />

with some other prints. But my best purchases are two<br />

charming little landscapes by Gaspar Poussin." J.C. mentions
