so to do to keep his name before the Academicians. —I told<br />

delight of the pleasure he had in being at the dinner on<br />

Saturday last. His Uncle Mr. D P Watts who gave him the<br />

ticket for admission said to Sir Thomas Bernard that in so<br />

doing He had given him something worth 100 guineas."<br />

1813 May 24 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called, and at noon I went with<br />

Him to Turner's Gallery to see His Exhibition of this year. Here<br />

we met Ramsay Reinagle and had conversation with Him<br />

respecting the pictures.—Turner's father was there, who told<br />

me he had walked from Twickenham this morning, Eleven<br />

miles; His age 68.—In two days the last week He sd. He had<br />

walked 50 miles.<br />

"<strong>Constable</strong> walked with me to the British Institution<br />

where I took my Catalogue as Academician. The Preface is<br />

sd. to have been written by Mr. Paine Knight, in which,<br />

<strong>Constable</strong> sd., there is a manifest allusion to the arrogant<br />

pretensions of Haydon.<br />

"We went from the British Institution to Peter Coxe's<br />

Auction rooms, where we had a private view of Mr. Willetts<br />

pictures now upon sale.—The collection on the whole was<br />

below my expectation.
