1807 Nov 16 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called. He attends the Life<br />

Academy every evening, and has for 3 months past been<br />

employed by Lord Dysart in copying pictures & painting<br />

original portraits. The Dowager Lady Dysart spoke to Him of<br />

the fine head Lawrence is painting of me.<br />

"Rigaud is the present Visitor at the Life Academy & is<br />

one of the best Visitors that the Academy affords & sets<br />

very good figures. . . .<br />

"Lord Dysart is abt. 68 years of age. . . . He is a very<br />

good man & kind to all who are dependant upon Him. He has<br />

more than £30,000 a year. . . . Lord Dysart amuses Himself<br />

with painting & applies more or less most days. He was much<br />

acquainted with Sir Joshua Reynolds. . . .<br />

"<strong>Constable</strong> sd. He had now the comfort of feeling Himself<br />

completely settled in His profession, and to know that His<br />

Father, finding that He is getting on and employed is<br />

reconciled to it.<br />

"We talked of the late Election of Associates. He sd. He<br />

thought the Academy had done very well in electing<br />

respectable men, whose manners wd. not disgrace the<br />

1807 Dec 1 Letter from J.C. to mother saying "that his uncle David Pike<br />

Watts was arranging a dinner party on the 12th at which he<br />

would be meeting a number of distinquished artists, adding<br />

that he hoped to come down to East Bergholt when it was<br />

over." (JCC I, p. 21)<br />

1807 Dec 1 Farington records: "<strong>Constable</strong> called & brought a card from<br />

Mr. David Pike Watts requesting me to dine with Him on<br />

Saturday the 12th inst. at No. 33 Portland Place. . . .
