of their marriage. He said He knew very little of <strong>Constable</strong> &<br />

that Mr. R. Miss Bicknell's grandfather had a strong objection<br />

to the match, & Had declared He would not give Her anything<br />

shd. she marry <strong>Constable</strong>, & He was afraid that it might<br />

operate farther, & cause Him to neglect His (Bicknell's) other<br />

Children.— He spoke of Himself as not having fortunes for<br />

them.— Owen gave such a character of <strong>Constable</strong> as seemed<br />

to afford Bicknell much pleasure, who mentioned the Royal<br />

Academy, & asked "Whether any interest cd. be of use to<br />

get <strong>Constable</strong> elected?" Owen sd. that nothing of that kind<br />

would have any effect but that the general feeling was so<br />

much in favor of <strong>Constable</strong>, that whenever it could be done<br />

with propriety He would have friends ready to support Him."<br />

1816 Nov 15 Sister Ann <strong>Constable</strong> mentions a portrait by J.C., presumably<br />

either the one of <strong>John</strong> Fisher or his wife. (JCC VI, p. 31) [If<br />

Beckett's date is correct, this is his only reference to this<br />

letter.]<br />

1816 Nov Letter from Ann <strong>Constable</strong> in East Bergholt to Maria<br />

<strong>Constable</strong>, addressed to London: "Mrs. Travis still exists . . . I<br />

hope my Brother finish'd the portrait to his wishes." (JCC I,<br />

1816 Nov-Dec Leaves Osmington. On way back to London, J.C. and Maria<br />

spend a few days at Salisbury with Bishop and Mrs. Fisher and<br />

also visit Binfield in Berkshire with the Cooksons. Had<br />

informed his family that they would be going straight back to<br />

his rooms in Charlotte Street, but they do not get back to<br />
