Abstract
The researchers are participants in the Africa
Higher Education Collaborative [AHEC], an
initiative of the Institute for International
Education’s Council for International Exchange
of Scholars [CIES] . CIES has brought together a
multinational and multidisciplinary group of
twenty African participants representing Egypt,
Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa through the
AHEC initiative, with a view to providing an
effective vehicle for comparative analysis of
cross-cutting issues impacting upon access to
African higher education.
The AHEC group will be working together over
eighteen months, pursuing inquiry along several
themes, all centred on the issue of access. The
group involved in this presentation is a subgroup
whose focus is on ‘Improving equity and
access to higher education by improving delivery
systems of higher education, including
pedagogy, methodologies and didactics’. Within
this theme, the group has defined its research
topic as follows: Beyond bricks, mortar and
university towers: rethinking delivery systems
in African Higher Education.
Our objective in this presentation is to share
work in progress on the project, and to
illuminate what the project seeks to achieve
eventually. Our ultimate intention is to develop
richly textured case studies of our respective
countries so that we have a solid basis for
comparison, distilling best practices, and making
recommendations for the future development of
delivery systems in Africa.

Résumé
Ceux qui ont fait ce travail de recherche
sont des gens qui participent à l’Africa
Higher Education Collaborative
[AHEC], initiative du Council for
International Exchange of Scholars
[CIES] à l’Institute for International
Education. Le CIES a mis en place un
groupe multinational et
pluridisciplinaire de vingt participants
africains représentant l’Egypte, le
Kenya, le Nigeria et l’Afrique du Sud
par l’intermédiaire de l’initiative
AHEC, en vue de mettre en place un
moyen efficace d’analyse comparée des
questions d’ordre général qui influent
sur l’accès à l’enseignement supérieur
en Afrique.
Le groupe AHEC va travailler pendant
dix-huit mois sur plusieurs thèmes, tous
centrés sur la question de l’accès. Le
groupe qui présente ce papier est un
sous groupe qui travaille sur le thème
suivant : ‘Comment améliorer l’égalité
des chances et l’accès à l’enseignement
supérieur en améliorant les systèmes
d’enseignement supérieur, y compris la
pédagogie, les méthodologies et la
didactique’. Dans le cadre de ce thème,
le groupe a défini son sujet de
recherché, à savoir: Au-delà des
briques, du mortier et des tours
universitaires: une nouvelle
conception des système
d’enseignement supérieur en Afrique.
Notre objectif est de partager le travail
en cours sur le projet et de jeter la
lumière sur ce que le projet envisage de
réaliser. Notre ultime intention est de
développer des études de cas bien
documentées sur nos pays respectifs
