the host sites. Fire service security stations were<br />
established near the venues, from where personnel<br />
carried out venue patrols, fire prevention activities,<br />
and fire drills. An aggregate of<br />
approximately 2,000 shifts were worked.<br />

After lessons learned at the Opening<br />
Ceremony, 120 extra staff from three private<br />
security companies were brought in to carry<br />
out security checks at spectator entrances for<br />
the Closing Ceremony.<br />
• Olympic Village (Jan. 8 – Feb. 25)<br />
A maximum of 100 personnel, with specialized<br />
equipment unique to the village including<br />
infrared cameras and the iris scan access<br />
control system. Imitation Japanese swords<br />
were a popular souvenir and 120 were<br />
brought in by athletes and officials. All had to<br />
be deposited with security staff to be picked<br />
up on departure.<br />
• Victory Ceremonies Site (Feb. 1 – 22)<br />
The mood in Central Square reflected the<br />
excitement of the Games, and the area was always<br />
packed with spectators. An additional<br />
100 private security guards were assigned<br />
when Japanese athletes won medals, for a<br />
maximum of 160 security staff coordinating<br />
crowd control.<br />
• Figure Skating Venue (Jan. 24 – Feb. 22)<br />
Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of<br />
Japan visited the venue three times, and there<br />
were also numerous visits by dignitaries from<br />
Japan and overseas. At peak times, approximately<br />
130 security personnel conducted entrance<br />
checks.<br />
• Alpine Skiing - Hakuba (Jan. 24 – Feb. 19)<br />
Changes to the competition schedule due to<br />
bad weather affected security plans and made<br />
it difficult to secure personnel. In such cases,<br />
the staff was supplemented by 20 extra private<br />
security guards, for a total of 180 security personnel.<br />
