Arrivals / Departures<br />

Personnel were stationed at designated airports<br />

and railway station transfer points to provide<br />

support for arrivals and departures. All<br />

Games-related personnel travelling to Japan<br />

were also sent a transportation guide book.<br />

NAOC worked in close cooperation with<br />

government and airport authorities to coordinate<br />

validation procedures for the new combined<br />

Olympic identity/accreditation card at airports.<br />

Members of the Olympic Family carrying a<br />

combined card and valid passport recognized by<br />

the Japanese government did not require any additional<br />

visa, which greatly simplified immigration<br />

procedures.<br />

Bus Services<br />

Taking into account the transportation routes<br />

and the results of spectator surveys, it was estimated<br />

that a cumulative total of 15,000 buses<br />

would be required during the Games period,<br />

with approximately 900 buses in operation on<br />

peak days. Most of the buses were provided<br />

through the cooperation of the Nagano<br />

Prefecture Bus Association, with extra buses<br />

brought in from five neighbouring prefectures.<br />

Bus service within the Olympic area was divided<br />

into four different regions managed by<br />

privately contracted prefectural bus companies.<br />

These four companies worked in close cooperation<br />

to provide a reliable service and drivers<br />

who were all trained professionals.<br />

A new computerized vehicle management<br />

system was introduced to cope with the large<br />

number of buses, unprecedented in scale in<br />

Nagano. The bus companies continually refined<br />

their plans and updated the number of vehicles<br />
