Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam,<br />
Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim,<br />
Tripura, and West Bengal. Important activities<br />
being supported for increasing productivity and<br />
quality <strong>of</strong> bamboo under the Mission are:<br />
increasing area under bamboo cultivation,<br />
establishment <strong>of</strong> nurseries for mass production<br />
<strong>of</strong> quality planting material <strong>of</strong> recommended<br />
species, improvement <strong>of</strong> existing stock, pest and<br />
disease management, post harvest<br />
management, development <strong>of</strong> human resources<br />
and <strong>of</strong> marketing facilities. The expected benefits<br />
<strong>of</strong> the mission include coverage <strong>of</strong> 1.76 lakh<br />
hectares <strong>of</strong> virgin area under bamboo plantations<br />
over a period <strong>of</strong> five years, employment<br />
generation <strong>of</strong> 50.4 million man days by bamboo<br />
plantation and related activities, and about 9.7<br />
lakh man days in the bamboo nursery sector.<br />
13.28 Objectives:<br />
To promote the growth <strong>of</strong> the bamboo<br />
sector through an area-based regionallydifferentiated<br />
strategy;<br />
To increase the coverage <strong>of</strong> area under<br />
bamboo in potential areas with suitable<br />
species to enhance yields;<br />
To promote the marketing <strong>of</strong> bamboo and<br />
bamboo-based handicrafts;<br />
To establish convergence and synergy<br />
among stakeholders for the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> bamboo;<br />
To promote, develop and disseminate<br />
technologies through a seamless blend<br />
<strong>of</strong> traditional wisdom and modern<br />
scientific knowledge;<br />
To generate employment opportunities<br />
for skilled and unskilled persons,<br />
especially unemployed youth.<br />
13.29 Achievements: During the year, 15,007<br />
hectares were covered under bamboo plantation<br />
in forest and non-forest areas. An area <strong>of</strong> 4,550<br />
hectares <strong>of</strong> existing stock has been treated for<br />
increasing productivity, while 385 farmers and<br />
100 field functionaries have been trained in<br />
managing bamboo nurseries and plantations,<br />
and four state-level workshops and thirteen<br />
district-level seminars have been organised.<br />
Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, and the Bamboo<br />
Technical Support Group, Guwahati have<br />
participated in the India International Trade Fair,<br />
New Delhi.<br />
13.30 In the North Eastern States, the Mission<br />
has allocated Rs. 4,000 lakh, against which a sum<br />
<strong>of</strong> Rs. 1,387.36 lakh has already been released.<br />
During the year, these states have covered 7,368<br />
hectares <strong>of</strong> bamboo plantation in forest and nonforest<br />
areas, and 1,250 hectares <strong>of</strong> existing stock<br />
have been treated for productivity improvement.<br />
13.31 Highlights<br />
As an innovation, more than 5,000 sq. m<br />
<strong>of</strong> poly-houses using engineered bamboo<br />
for farmers have been established in<br />
different parts <strong>of</strong> Meghalaya.<br />
A Model Handicraft Training Centre has<br />
been established at Guwahati, Assam.<br />
A <strong>Co</strong>mmon Facility Centre (CFC) for<br />
processing <strong>of</strong> bamboo has been<br />
established at Karbianglong, Assam.<br />
In different parts <strong>of</strong> Chhattisgarh, 27<br />
Bamboo Craft Training and Processing<br />
centres have been established.<br />
13.32 In the North Eastern states (including<br />
Sikkim), the Mission has allocated Rs. 40 crore,<br />
against which a sum <strong>of</strong> Rs. 17.76 crore has<br />
already been released. During the year, these<br />
states have raised 4,388 hectare <strong>of</strong> bamboo<br />
plantations in forest and non-forest areas.<br />
