TO: The Board of Regents Addendum IX-A-3 Academic Affairs MEETING DATE: September 5, 2008 SUBJECT: Professional Program in Plant Health Doctor of Plant Health RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the Professional Program in Plant Health with a Doctor of Plant Health implemented upon approval PREVIOUS ACTION: None EXPLANATION: The proposed program and curriculum will be offered by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ Departments of Agronomy and Horticulture, Entomology, and Plant Pathology. A director advised by a graduate committee consisting of members from the Departments of Agronomy and Horticulture, Entomology, and Plant Pathology, and a non-voting representative from industry will provide guidance and oversight for the program. The curriculum provides instruction in pests and pathogens, plant pathology, entomology, weed science, plant and soil science, natural resources and ecology, quantitative tools, law, policy and leadership, as well as internships and a project. The program will prepare graduates with a broad interest in plant sciences and the microbes, arthropods, and environmental conditions that affect the growth and production of healthy plants. Emphasis is on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of biotic and abiotic plant health challenges. The program has widespread campus support. The course of study for the proposed program was approved by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ Curriculum Committee, the UNL Academic Planning Committee, campus administration, and the Council of Academic Officers. PROJECT COST: No new costs to UNL. Negotiations with a faculty member considering the Doctor of Plant Health directorship may result in an annual administrative stipend of approximately $5,000. This stipend will be covered through reallocation in year one and offset in subsequent years by tuition revenue, which flows back to the program. SOURCE OF FUNDS: None
