B.2. Demand for the Program<br />

Students with baccalaureate degrees in various construction fields, engineering, and<br />

architecture from other US institutions will be attracted to UNL’s Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Construction<br />

program because <strong>of</strong> the national and international reputation <strong>of</strong> UNL’s construction program<br />

graduates. UNL graduates are currently working in leadership positions for most major<br />

construction firms in the US, as well as many locations abroad. Some <strong>of</strong> these companies (to name<br />

a small few) are:<br />

• M. A. Mortenson Company<br />

• Weitz Company<br />

• Black and Veatch<br />

• Turner Corporation<br />

• Hensel Phelps<br />

• Whiting-Turner<br />

• Granite Construction<br />

<strong>Nebraska</strong> has many construction firms with personnel seeking graduate education in<br />

construction to enhance their opportunities for promotion and advancement. Many have taken<br />

undergraduate degrees in architecture, business, or other fields that preclude them from seeking<br />

graduate education in an engineering field. The M.S. in construction will have a track in<br />

construction management and construction engineering that will be available for these individuals.<br />

There are seven EAC-ABET accredited undergraduate construction engineering programs<br />

and fifty-nine ACCE undergraduate construction management programs in the U.S. with both<br />

operating with a total <strong>of</strong> 51 M.S. construction programs. Some examples <strong>of</strong> similar programs to this<br />

proposal:<br />

- Iowa State <strong>University</strong>; Ames, Iowa - Texas A&M <strong>University</strong>; College Station, Texas<br />

- <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> New Mexico, Albuquerque; New Mexico - Arizona State <strong>University</strong>; Tempe, Arizona<br />

- North Carolina State <strong>University</strong>; Raleigh, North Carolina - <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Florida; Gainesville, Florida<br />

- Auburn <strong>University</strong>, Auburn; Alabama - Colorado State <strong>University</strong>; Fort Collins, Colorado<br />

- Western Michigan <strong>University</strong>; Kalamazoo, Michigan - <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma; Norman, Oklahoma<br />

The average number <strong>of</strong> construction engineering students in a construction engineering<br />

program is 144 with an average <strong>of</strong> 29 graduating each year, per institution. This extrapolates to just<br />

over 200 construction engineers a year entering a workplace in which the need for people with a<br />

construction engineering degree is increasing. <strong>Nebraska</strong> could add to the supply <strong>of</strong> construction<br />

engineers by attracting qualified students to the PKI and UNL campuses by <strong>of</strong>fering a high quality<br />

M.S. in construction with a construction engineering track as outlined in this proposal.<br />
