SUBJECT: Design Report for the Whittier Building Renovation at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Nebraska</strong>-Lincoln<br />

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Report<br />

PREVIOUS ACTION: June 14, 2007 – The Board <strong>of</strong> Regents approved the Program Statement<br />

and Budget for the Whittier Building Renovation at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Nebraska</strong>-Lincoln (UNL).<br />

November 11, 2005 – The Board <strong>of</strong> Regents approved the Program<br />

Statement and Budget for the renovation <strong>of</strong> the Whittier North Annex for<br />

a <strong>University</strong> Child Care Center.<br />

EXPLANATION: This project renovates an 84-year old landmark that is obsolete and<br />

inefficient to operate to a modern laboratory, <strong>of</strong>fice, and child care<br />

facility that will make the <strong>University</strong> competitive in attracting faculty,<br />

staff, students, and research funding.<br />

PROJECT COST: $23,750,000<br />

The project supports the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nebraska</strong> Strategic Framework<br />

goals to improve the quantity and quality <strong>of</strong> research space through<br />

public and private support; increase external support for research and<br />

scholarly activity; be cost effective and accountable to the citizens <strong>of</strong> the<br />

state; maintain competitive capital facilities; and provide competitive<br />

salaries and benefits to attract and retain excellent faculty and staff.<br />

Spaces will be reconfigured to better meet the present and future<br />

programmatic needs <strong>of</strong> the building’s occupants. The project will<br />

replace the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, correct fire and<br />

life safety and accessibility deficiencies, and eliminate the presence <strong>of</strong><br />

asbestos-containing materials. The project will be completed in a single<br />

phase and the building will not be occupied during construction.<br />
