SUBJECT: Design Report for the Whittier Building Renovation at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Report
PREVIOUS ACTION: June 14, 2007 – The Board of Regents approved the Program Statement
and Budget for the Whittier Building Renovation at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).
November 11, 2005 – The Board of Regents approved the Program
Statement and Budget for the renovation of the Whittier North Annex for
a University Child Care Center.
EXPLANATION: This project renovates an 84-year old landmark that is obsolete and
inefficient to operate to a modern laboratory, office, and child care
facility that will make the University competitive in attracting faculty,
staff, students, and research funding.
PROJECT COST: $23,750,000
The project supports the University of Nebraska Strategic Framework
goals to improve the quantity and quality of research space through
public and private support; increase external support for research and
scholarly activity; be cost effective and accountable to the citizens of the
state; maintain competitive capital facilities; and provide competitive
salaries and benefits to attract and retain excellent faculty and staff.
Spaces will be reconfigured to better meet the present and future
programmatic needs of the building’s occupants. The project will
replace the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, correct fire and
life safety and accessibility deficiencies, and eliminate the presence of
asbestos-containing materials. The project will be completed in a single
phase and the building will not be occupied during construction.
