Joseph and Abigail Winslow, children <strong>of</strong> his deceased<br />

daughter Abigail. He appoints his wife Mercy sole execu-<br />

trix, and gives her the residue <strong>of</strong> his large estate.<br />

The will <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Mercy Bourne, widow <strong>of</strong> Hon. Sylvanus,<br />

is dated July 10, 1781, and was proved May 28, 1782.<br />

She gives to her son Richard, all her real estate—lands,<br />

buildings, woodlands and meadows, a silver hilted sword<br />

that was his father's, a large silver tankard that was his<br />

grandfather's, her best great Bible, two pair <strong>of</strong> oxen, one<br />

cow, half her sheep, all her husbandry tools, &c.<br />

To her three daughters Desire Clap, Mary Stone and<br />

Hannah Hinckley, she gave all her plate (except tankai-d to<br />

Richard, and silver porringer to Mei'cy), all her wearing<br />

apparel and household furniture, excepting what she had<br />

given Richard, and £30 each.<br />

To her granddaughter Abigail Gallison, her mother's<br />

work, called a chimney-piece. Also, two mourning rings,<br />

her grandfather Bourne's and her mother's.<br />

She gave to her daughter Mercy Jordan, a work called<br />

the Coat <strong>of</strong> Arms, one silver porringer and £(5, over and<br />

above what she had already had <strong>of</strong> her.<br />

She also gave the following legacies :<br />

To the children <strong>of</strong> her son Melatiah, deceased, £30.<br />

To the children <strong>of</strong> her daughter Abigail, deceased, £20.<br />

To the children <strong>of</strong> her daughter Eunice, deceased, £20.<br />

To the children <strong>of</strong> her son William, £20.<br />

To son-in-law John Gallison, Esq., £10.<br />

To daughter-in-law Hannah JBourne, £3.<br />

She gave her negro boy Cato to her son Richard, on<br />

the following conditions, that is,, as soon as the said Cato<br />

shall arrive to the age <strong>of</strong> 35 years, her said son Richard shall<br />

manumit him. Her negro girl Chloe she gave "to such<br />

daughter as Chloe should prefer to live with, the daughter<br />

receiving her to pay such sum as said girl shall be apprized<br />

at."<br />

She appointed her son Richard sole executor and residuary<br />

legatee, and ordered him to pay all the legacies in<br />

silver dollars at six shillings each.<br />

The portrait <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Bourne, painted by Copley in<br />

1766, has been preserved, and some <strong>of</strong> the worsted work<br />

named in her will. The old family portraits were stowed<br />

away in the garret <strong>of</strong> the late Sylvanus Bourne, and finally
