house. He had nine children and has many descendants.<br />

9. VIII. Hannah, married Nathaniel Bosworth.<br />

10. IX. Ruth, married Nov. 1664 Thomas Cushman.<br />

11. X. Isaac, youngest son, Middleboro', married Elizabeth<br />

Vaugham, he was a soldier in Philip's war, kept an inn in<br />

1684, and was <strong>of</strong>ten representative to the Colony Court, and<br />

died in 1724.<br />

Lieutenant John Howland, second <strong>of</strong> the name, was born in<br />

Plymouth Feb. 24, 1626-7, as he informed Chief Justice Sewali<br />

when at <strong>Barnstable</strong> in 1702. He removed from Plymouth to<br />

Marshfield, and thence to <strong>Barnstable</strong> about the year 1658. His<br />

farm at West N<strong>Barnstable</strong> contained about 90 acres, and in 1672 he<br />

conveyed by deed the easterly half there<strong>of</strong> to his brother-in-law<br />

Elder John Chipman. A portion <strong>of</strong> his estate is yet owned by his<br />

descendants. He held many town <strong>of</strong>fices and was lieutenant <strong>of</strong><br />

the military company. He was admitted a freeman <strong>of</strong> the colony<br />

in 1658. There is some evidence that in early life he favored the<br />

Quakers. He certainly was opposed to the intolerant party <strong>of</strong><br />

which George Barlow <strong>of</strong> Sandwich was the leading man. His<br />

wife joined the church Nov. 22, 1691. He and two other aged<br />

men, Joseph Lothrop and James Lewis, joined the church on the<br />

18th <strong>of</strong> June, 1699.<br />

He married 26th Oct. 1651, Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> Robert Lee.<br />

He probably had two children born in Marshfield, his other eight<br />

children were born in <strong>Barnstable</strong>.<br />
