that they sympathized with Robinson in his views respecting the<br />

impolicy <strong>of</strong> those laws.<br />

In 1649 he was a freeman, and in 1652 he was a grand-juror,<br />

and appointed by the Treasurer <strong>of</strong> the Colony, a committee for<br />

the Town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong> to receive 'the proportion <strong>of</strong> oil taken<br />

which belonged to the Colony ; in 1663, '4, '5, '8 and '9 he was<br />

representative from <strong>Barnstable</strong> to the Colony Court; in 1665, '6,<br />

'7, and '8 he was one <strong>of</strong> the selectmen <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>, who at that<br />

time exercised, in addition to other duties, the functions since pertaining<br />

to justices <strong>of</strong> the peace; and in 1667 he was one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

council <strong>of</strong> war. For his public services the court in 1669 granted<br />

him one hundred acres <strong>of</strong> land, between Taunton and Titicut,<br />

which was afterwards confirmed to him.<br />

His will is dated at Sandwich, Nov. 12, 1702, and was proved<br />

May 17, 1708. In it he says : "I will and bequeath to Ruth, my<br />

dear and loving wife, all whatsoever is left <strong>of</strong> her estate, which I<br />

had with her when I married her. I also give her one half part <strong>of</strong><br />

my whole personal estate which shall be found in Sandwich at my decease.<br />

Besides and moreover, all the carts plows and husbandry<br />

implements, as also all the corn meat, flax wool, yarn and cloth<br />

that is in the house at my decease, and I do give her twenty<br />

pounds in money which is due to her by ye compact made between<br />

us at our inter-marriage ; she according to sd compact, upon payment<br />

<strong>of</strong> this twenty pounds to qnitt claim to all right and title and<br />

interest in my housing and lands att <strong>Barnstable</strong>, and this twenty<br />

pounds shall be paid her out <strong>of</strong> that money <strong>of</strong> mine in ye baud <strong>of</strong><br />

my friend Mr. Jonathan Russell <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>."<br />

He bequeathes to his sons Samuel and John his whole real<br />

estate in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, Samuel two parts and John one part, unless<br />

my son Samuel pay his brother John £70 in lieu <strong>of</strong> his third part.<br />

He gives his son Samuel his carpenters tools, then in his possession.<br />

To his two grand children Mary Gale and Jabez Dimmock<br />

£5 apiece. He names his daughters, Elizabeth, Hope, Lydia,<br />

Hannah, Ruth, Bethia, Mercy and Desu-e. He appoints his sons<br />

Samuel and John executors, and Mr. Jonathan Russell and Mr.<br />

Rowland Cotton overseers. Witnesses, Rowland Cotton, Samuel<br />

Prince and Nathan Bassett. In the inventory <strong>of</strong> his estate, taken<br />

by Wm. Bassett and Shubael Smith, it stated that he died 7 April,<br />

1708. His real estate is not apprised.—Among the articles apprised<br />

is plate at 8 sh per ounce, £8.2. ; Cash, at 8 sh per ounce,<br />

£51.5.3. ; Bills <strong>of</strong> Credit, £6.6. ; Cash in Mr. Jonathan Russell's<br />

hands £20. 18 books, small and great, £1.<br />
