DEAN.<br />

Eev. Mr. Dean in his history <strong>of</strong> Scituate, states that Jonas<br />

Deane was in that town in 1690, that he was called Taunton Dean,<br />

and that he came from Taunton, in England. He died in 1697,<br />

leaving a widow Eunice, who married in 1701, Dea. James Torrey,<br />

Town Clerk. His children were Thomas, born Oct. 29, 1691, and<br />

Ephraim, born May 22, 1695. Ephraim married Ann and settled<br />

in Provincetown, and had Eunice Nov. 10, 1725 ; Thankful Feb.<br />

March 4, 1730-31, and perhaps others.<br />

Thomas settled in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, and was admitted, May 23,<br />

1731, a member, <strong>of</strong> the East Church. He probably resided at<br />

South Sea. He married Lydia, and his children born in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

July 7, 1728, married Joseph Bearse Oct. 12,<br />

II. Thomas, April 19, 1730, married Abigail Horton.<br />

All baptized at the East Church.<br />

Thomas Dean, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas, married Abigail Horton,<br />

(published Feb. 29, 1752,) and had<br />

I. Hannah, born Jan. 20, 1753.<br />

II. Archelaus, June 26, 1755<br />

After the latter date the name disappears on the <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

records. There are numerous descendants <strong>of</strong> Thomas Dean <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Barnstable</strong> ; but they are widely scattered. Archelaus Dean<br />

Atwood, Esq., <strong>of</strong> Orrington, Maine, is a descendant.
