that time so many John Allyns in New England, that in the<br />

absence <strong>of</strong> records it is difficult to fix the place <strong>of</strong> his after<br />

residence.<br />

In January, 1693-4, there were in <strong>Barnstable</strong> and entitled<br />

to a share in the common lands, being either 24 years<br />

<strong>of</strong> age, or married, Lieut. Samuel AUyn, eldest son <strong>of</strong><br />

Thomas, Sen'r, and Samuel and Thomas, sons <strong>of</strong> Lieut.<br />

Samuel. January, 1697, Thomas was dead, and Joseph,<br />

youngest son <strong>of</strong> Lieut. Samuel, was added to the list, he<br />

being then 25 years <strong>of</strong> age, but in 1703 his name is omitted.<br />

The present Allyn <strong>families</strong> in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, are nearly all<br />

descendants <strong>of</strong> James, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas, and grandson <strong>of</strong><br />

Lieut. Samuel. His house was very ancient, the east part<br />

two stories, and the west one story. It stood on Lot No. 1,<br />

where Charles Hinckley's house now is, and it was taken<br />

down about 50 years ago. He married<br />
