The male descendants <strong>of</strong> Rev. John Lothrop are not nownumerous<br />

in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, though many <strong>of</strong> them are widely scattered<br />

throughout New England. Of his sons, Joseph and Barnabas<br />

were men <strong>of</strong> wide influence and a good deal <strong>of</strong> ability.<br />

Thomas, the eldest son was, as before stated, born in England<br />

in 1621. He joined his father's church in Scituate 14th May,<br />

1637, being then but 16 years <strong>of</strong> age ; married, according to Savage,<br />

11th Dec. 1639, Sarah, widow <strong>of</strong> Thomas Ewer, being then<br />

about 18<br />

respectable and useful man, but not equal in ability to his<br />

brothers, Joseph and Barnabas.<br />

Joseph, also born in England, besides being a civilian <strong>of</strong> distinction<br />

was a military <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> merit. He was deputy to the<br />

colony court in 1667, and for 18 years afterwards. In 1676,<br />

Lieut. Lothrop, as he was then styled, was the <strong>Barnstable</strong> member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the council <strong>of</strong> war, consisting <strong>of</strong> one member from each<br />

town in the colony, during King Philip's uprising ; and again in<br />

1685. In company with his brother Barnabas, in 1676, he acted<br />

as agent for the settlement <strong>of</strong> Rochester. He was Register <strong>of</strong><br />

Deeds and Register <strong>of</strong> Probate in 1702 and succeeding years,<br />

Sheriff from 1715 to 1721, and Judge <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> Common<br />

Pleas 1701 and several years following.<br />

Barnabas, bap. at Scituate, where he was born, 6th June,<br />

1636, was a civilian <strong>of</strong> much prominence. He was a deputy to<br />

the colonial court in 1675, continuing in that <strong>of</strong>fice until 1685, in-
