His will is dated 20th July, 1729, proved Nov. 3 following,<br />

showing that he died that year. He names his wife Ann, son<br />

Matthias, and daughters Mercy, wife <strong>of</strong> Ebenezer Crowell ; Desire,<br />

who married Thomas Hallett, Aug. 19, 1750; Rose, who<br />

married Ephraim Crowell ; Elizabeth, and Ann who married William<br />

Taylor Sept. 17, 1741. Matthias, his only son, married<br />

Nov. 1, "1733, Mary Davis, and had born in Yarmouth, 1, Lydia,<br />

Jan. 13, 1734-5; 2, Elizabeth, Dec. 28, 1737; 3, Mehitabel,<br />

Jan. 26, 1739-40 ; 4, Ann, Jan. 1, 1741-2 ; 5, John, March 26,<br />

1744; 6, Mary, May 16, 1746; and 7, Matthias, Dec. 17, 1743.<br />

John and Matthias married and have descendants.<br />

18-6. Thomas Gorham, born 16th Dec. 1684, a son <strong>of</strong><br />

James, resided in <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He was a blacksmith. He married<br />

in 1707, Rachell Trott <strong>of</strong> Nantucket, and had :<br />

79. IX. Gershom, 22d June, 1725.<br />

80. X. Abigail, 13th May, 1729.<br />

In his will dated in 1758, and proved Dee. 3, 1771, he names<br />

his daughter Abigail Easterbrooks, to whom he gives half his<br />

lands and his dwelling-house, and to his son Benjamin the other<br />

half. He also names his daughter Priscilla Folger. His children<br />

did not realize anything from his estate for he died insolvent, paying<br />

his creditors 15 sh. 6d. in the £.<br />

As he names in 1758 only Benjamin, Priscilla and Abigail,<br />

the presumption is that his other children were then dead. Peter<br />

is named as a whaleman in 1733.<br />

71. Benjamin Gorham married Sarah Cobb <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth, Oct.<br />

23, 1739, and had Samuel born Sept. 2, 1740. No other children<br />

are named on the <strong>Barnstable</strong> records. He was drowned in the<br />

Mill Pond in 1771. There were five Benjamin Gorham's in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

at the same time, and all residents in the East Parish, and<br />

<strong>of</strong> necessity had to be distinguished by nicknames, namely :<br />

1. Benjamin, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas, born Sept. 8, 1708, died 1771,<br />

was called "Moderate Ben."<br />

2. Benjamin, son <strong>of</strong> John, born June 18, 1715, died in 1784,<br />

was called "Old Fiddler."<br />

3. Benjamin, son <strong>of</strong> Shubael, born June 4, 1726, was called
