man, after due consideration, he acknowledged that he "had no<br />

just cause, soe to say, and -was sorry for soe saying, and desired<br />

Mr. Jenkins to pass it by."<br />

He died in 1685, and his wife Alice in 1689. In her will<br />

dated Jan. 10, 1688, and proved Sept. 4, 1689, she names her<br />

son John whom she cuts <strong>of</strong>f with a shilling ; her daughter Ruth<br />

Davis, to whom she gives 40 shillings, a brass kettle, and half<br />

her wearing apparel ; to her daughter Elizabeth, then unmarried,<br />

£20, and the other half <strong>of</strong> her wearing apparel ; to her daughterin-law<br />

Lydia, wife <strong>of</strong> her son Ebenezer, one colt and one gown<br />

to her grandson Benjamin, son <strong>of</strong> Ebenezer, 1 colt ; and to her<br />

son Ebenezer, her dwelling-house, and all her other estate.<br />

Roger Goodspeed left no will. He divided his large landed estate<br />

to his children by deeds, and the agreement above referred to<br />

executed during his lifetime. He married Alice Layton Dec. 1,<br />

4. III. Mary, July 1647, married, 14th Dec. 1664, Samuel<br />

Hinckley.<br />

5. IV. Benjamin, 6th Mav, 1649, (see below.)<br />

6. V. Ruth, 10th April, "^1652, married, 2d Feb. 1674-5,<br />

John Davis, Jr.<br />

7. VI. Ebenezer, Dec. 1655, (see below.)<br />

8. VII. Elizabeth, 1st May, 1658, (unmarried 1688.)<br />

1. Nathaniel Goodspeed, son <strong>of</strong> Roger, married Nov. 1666,<br />

Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> Mr. John Bursley. He died June, 1670,<br />

and his widow married Oct. 1675, Increase Clap. He had two<br />

children born in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, namely :<br />

9. I. Mary, born 18th Feb. 1667-8.<br />

10. II. Nathaniel, probably. Another child beside Mary is<br />

mentioned in the settlement <strong>of</strong> the father's estate.<br />

Nathaniel Goodspeed is also named several times on the<br />

town records. After 1703 his name disappears, and a<br />

Nathaniel Goodspeed, who married Sarah, appears at<br />

Rochester, and had a family born from 1706 to 1713.<br />

2. John Goodspeed, son <strong>of</strong> Roger, resided at Mistick. He<br />

died in 1719, aged 74, and names in his will his wife Experience,<br />

sons John and Benjamin ; daughters Mary, Rose and Bathsheba,<br />

grand-daughter Ruth, daughter <strong>of</strong> his son Samuel, deceased. He<br />

left a large estate. He married 9th Jan. 1668, Experience Holway,<br />

and had<br />

11. I. Mary or Mercy, 18 Feb. 1669.<br />

12. II. Samuel, 23d June, 1670, died before his father. He<br />

married, and had a daughter Ruth living in 1719.<br />

13. III. John, 1st June, 1673, (see below.)<br />

14. IV. Experience, 14th Sept. 1676, not living in 1718.
