dition to thirds, he gives his best bed and £40. To his son Ebenezer<br />

he gives the east end <strong>of</strong> his house then occupied by him, and<br />

other property. To his son Samuel land at Skonkonet, and to his<br />

son Josiah other property. To his grandson Thomas, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Ebenezer, land at Skonkonet. To his daughter Thankful he bequeathed<br />

£10, to Mary £10, Hope £10, Experience £20, Sarab<br />

£20. He signs his will with his mark, not always evidence that<br />

the testator can not write ; but this will having been made seven<br />

years before bis death, he was probably in good health at the<br />

time, and this fact indicates that his education bad been defect-<br />

ive.<br />

His estate was apprised at £3,849,16,10. Among other matters<br />

a negro woman is apprised at £100. The cniTency had then<br />

became much depreciated and to reduce these sum-s to lawful<br />

money two- thirds at least must be deducted. 80 bushels <strong>of</strong> corn,<br />

wheat and other grain, in the inventory, is apprised at £49, four<br />

times its value fifty years earlier. However, calling his estate<br />

£1000 in lawful money, he was wealthy for the times.<br />

He was in the eightieth year <strong>of</strong> his age when he died. He<br />

married 24th Aug. 1687, Experience, daughter <strong>of</strong> James Hamblen,<br />

Jr. It appears by his will that he married a second wife named<br />

Mercy .<br />

18. I. Thankful, 19th May, 1691, married (Isaac?) Taylor. '<br />

19. II. Experience, 28th March, 1693, married John Pope Oct.<br />

20. III. Mercy, 5th Jan. 1695-6, married John White 23fl<br />

Dec. 1718.<br />

21. IV. Ebenezer, 5th Dec. 1697. He died June, 1750, and in<br />

his will dated June 19, 1750, proved on the 5th <strong>of</strong> July following,<br />

he names his wife Elizabeth and all his children.<br />

His estate is apprised at £357,19,4 in lawful money. He<br />

resided at West <strong>Barnstable</strong> in a part <strong>of</strong> his father's house,<br />

situate on the estate now owned by Chipman W. Whelden.<br />

He married 9th Nov. 1721, Judith White. She died April<br />

25, 1729, leaving an only child Thomas. He married July<br />

25, 1732, Elizabeth Tupper, who survived him. His children<br />

were : 1, Thomas, born March 8, 1725-6, married Thankful<br />

Wing <strong>of</strong> Harwich April 23, 1752; 2, Ebenezer, July 6,<br />

1736; 3, Nathan, Oct. 21, 1734, married Dec. 9, 1762,<br />

Rachel Howland, (father <strong>of</strong> Asa and grandfather <strong>of</strong> the<br />

present Nathan) ; 4, Martha, Friday Nov. 4, 1737 ; and 5,<br />

Elizabeth, Friday May 9, 1740.<br />

VI. Josiah, 16th April, 1702, married in 1737 Mary Ellis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Middleboro', and resided at West <strong>Barnstable</strong>. His will
