HERSEY-<br />

This is a Hingham name. William, the common ancestor,<br />

wrote Ilia name Hersie. He was <strong>of</strong> Hingham in 1636, a freeman<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Massachusetts Colony March, 1638, <strong>of</strong> the Artillery Company<br />

in 1652, and died 24th Maich, 1668, leaving wife Elizabeth.<br />

In his will dated March 9, 1668, he names his sons William,<br />

John and James, and daughters PVances, Elizabeth and Judith.<br />

Frances married Riciiard Croad 29th May, 1666. Judith married<br />

Dec. 1663, Humphrey Wilson. Mr. SSavage remaiks "'that it has<br />

been from early days a very prevalent name in Hingham, and it<br />

may well be a cause <strong>of</strong> regret that we have no fuller genealogical<br />

account <strong>of</strong> the family."<br />

Three <strong>of</strong> this name settled in <strong>Barnstable</strong>. Dr. James Hersey,<br />

Dr. Abner Hersey, and Rev. Henry Hersey, the latter now<br />

living, and kindly remembered by all his old parishioners foi his<br />

urbane feelings and gentlemanly bearing.<br />

Dr. James Hersey, son <strong>of</strong> James and Mary Hersey, was born<br />

in Hingham Dec. 21, 1716. He settled as a physician in Barnsta-<br />

ble, puichased a part <strong>of</strong> the Dimmoek estate, which included the<br />

ancient stone house built by Elder Thos. Dimmoek. A tradition<br />

exists that he resided in a house that stood east <strong>of</strong> the stone<br />

house ; but it is more probable that he resided in the stone house.<br />

He owned it, and it was at that time in good repair. The three<br />

sons <strong>of</strong> James and Mary Hersey, <strong>of</strong> Hingham, were all physicians.<br />

Ezekiel, the elder, graduated at Harvard College in 1728,<br />

settled in Hingham, and died Dec. 9, 1770, aged sixty-two years,<br />

leaving no children. Dr. James Thacher speak <strong>of</strong> him as a<br />

man eminent in his pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

James, the second son, did not receive a public education ; he<br />

was, however, well educated, and Dr. Thacher speaks <strong>of</strong> him as a<br />

skilful physician, who had at the time <strong>of</strong> his death, July 22, 1741,<br />

acquired an extensive practice in the County. Tradition gives<br />

him a good name. He married July 27, 1737, Lydia, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Col. Shubael Gorham. She died Nov. 9, 1740, leaving one son,<br />

James, born Nov. 9, 1738.<br />

For his second wife Dr. James Hersey married April 9, 1741,
