Sarah Lewis June 17, 1711 ; she died March 21, 1737-8, aged<br />

46, and he married for his second wife, July, 1739, Mrs. Thankful<br />

Miller <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth. He died April 12, 1751, aged 65,<br />

(gravestones.) In his will dated on the day preceding his death<br />

he made provisions that were unsatisfactory to his widow and<br />

children, but they had the good sense to settle the trouble satisfactorily<br />

among themselves. He bequeathed to his wife all the<br />

property she brought to him excepting her dock and negro woman,<br />

and the use <strong>of</strong> one-third <strong>of</strong> his estate so long as she remained a<br />

widow. To his three sons, Eben, Thomas and Samuel, he gave<br />

all his real estate. To Eben his negro boy Boston, and his Indian<br />

boy, &c. ; to Thomas and Samuel his negro boy "George" ;<br />

to his daughter Susannah Hinckley his negro girl "Barbara," &c.<br />

and to his daughter Mary Hinckley his negro boy "Jethro." His<br />

wife's negro woman he undertook to make the common property<br />

<strong>of</strong> his five children, but that matter and the clock was set right by<br />

the sons. His children born in <strong>Barnstable</strong> were : 1, Ebenezer,<br />

10th Sept. 1712, married in 1743, Mehitable Sturgis <strong>of</strong> Yarmouth,<br />

and had Sarah April 19, 1744, Temperance Jan. 20,<br />

1748, and Ebenezer Sept. 23, 1754, the latter married, had a<br />

family, and lived to great age—the mother died Nov. 14, 1773,<br />

aged 53 ; 2, Daniel, 8th July, 1714, died Aug. 8, 1714 ; 3, a son,<br />

24th Sept. 1715, died Sept. 27, 1715 ; 4, Thomas, 27th July,<br />

• 1717, married Nov. 9,-1752, Phebe Holmes <strong>of</strong> Plymouth, and had<br />

Daniel March 20, 1754, Phebe, Aug. 8, 1755, Patience July 16,<br />

1757, Temperance, Thomas and James. He resided in a house<br />

that stood opposite the present residence <strong>of</strong> Mr. Solomon Hinckley<br />

in <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He died AprU. 30, 1775, aged 59 ; 5, Susannah,<br />

April 18, 1722 ; 6, Samuel, 7th Sept. 1727, a sea captain,<br />

had the westerly part <strong>of</strong> his father's estate, on which he built a<br />

splendid mansion, married, and had one daughter who married<br />

Samuel Allyn. He died early in life, leaving a large estate. His<br />

widow survived him many years, and died in the Alms House ; 7,<br />

Mary, born 12th April, 1729, married Feb. 20, 1752, Samuel<br />

Childs.<br />

(37.) Thomas Hinckley, son <strong>of</strong> the second Samuel, born<br />

1st Jan. 1688-9, resided at West <strong>Barnstable</strong>. He was a tanner<br />

and died in 1756. aged 68, leaving four children, two <strong>of</strong> whom,<br />

Mercy and Mary, were <strong>of</strong> feeble minds and incapable <strong>of</strong> taking<br />

care <strong>of</strong> themselves. His real estate was apprised at £944, and<br />

his personal at £863,5,6. Seth Hamblen was appointed guardian<br />

to Mercy and Mary, to each <strong>of</strong> whom was assigned £182, paid by<br />

their brother Elijah, to whom four-fifths <strong>of</strong> the estate was set <strong>of</strong>f,<br />

and to his sister Temperance Otis, one-fifth. The children <strong>of</strong> Mr.<br />

Thomas Hinckley, born in <strong>Barnstable</strong>, were : 1, Seth, Aug. 17,<br />

1720, died Sept. 20, 1720 ; 2, Mercy, Feb. 11, 1721 ; 3, Temperance,<br />

Jan. 20, 1725, married John Otis, Esq., Dec. 3, 1741 ; 4,
