(19.) Jabez Lewes, son <strong>of</strong> George, (4) born in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

10th June, 1670, married 20th Feb. 1695, Experience Hamblin.<br />

His son John is recorded as born in <strong>Barnstable</strong> 27th Aug. 1696.<br />

In 1702 he had removed to Yarmouth, where he had three children<br />

whose births are recorded, and the same were baptized in the church<br />

at <strong>Barnstable</strong> <strong>of</strong> which his wife continued to be a member all her<br />

long life. He had other children, Eleanor named in his will and<br />

Jabez <strong>of</strong> Harwich, probably his son. In his will dated Jan. 19,<br />

1737-8, proved 1738, he names his wife Experience, eldest sou<br />

John, sons Elnathan and Antipas, and daughter Eleanor Robbins.<br />

Jabez <strong>of</strong> Harwich died April 6, 1732, and for that reason it is probable<br />

he is not named. Jabez the elder was not a prominent man,<br />

though on the Probate records he is called Mr., a mark <strong>of</strong> distinction<br />

in those days. He died in 1738, aged 68, and the widow Experience<br />

July 26, 1766, aged 92 years and 3 months.<br />

Jabez married Sarah Lincoln Feb. 27, 1723—had born in Harwich<br />

(20.) Benj. Lewes, son <strong>of</strong> George, (4) born in <strong>Barnstable</strong><br />

22d Nov. 1675, married 10th Feb. 1696-7, Margaret Folland <strong>of</strong><br />

Yarmouth. In 1691 the town agreed to raise £30 to assist in defraying<br />

the expense <strong>of</strong> procuring a new charter for the colony <strong>of</strong><br />

Plymouth. To raise this sum parcels <strong>of</strong> the common lands were<br />

sold. George Lewes bought for £5 twelve acres <strong>of</strong> land at Crooked<br />

Pond, <strong>of</strong> late years known as Lampson's Pond. This tract <strong>of</strong> land<br />

he gave to his son Benjamin, who built his house thereon. It was<br />

in a solitary spot in the midst <strong>of</strong> the forest, about equally distant<br />

from the settlements on the north and south side <strong>of</strong> the Cape. The<br />
