At 23 she married, April 9, 1741, Dr. James Hersey, a native<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hingham, a man <strong>of</strong> learning and skillful in his pr<strong>of</strong>ession. By<br />

him she had a son Ezekiel, born Jan. 14, 1741-2. He died July<br />

22, 1741, aged 26. His first wife was.Lydia Gorham, whom he<br />

married July 27, 1737. She had a son James, bom Nov. 9, 1738,<br />

and she died Nov. 9, 1740. Dr. James Hersey owned that portion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Dimmoek farm on which the fortification house stood,<br />

and whether he resided in that, or in a house that formerly stood<br />

a little west <strong>of</strong> the present residence <strong>of</strong> Asa Young, Esq., 1 cannot<br />

say. Dr. James was succeeded in his practice by his brother, Dr.<br />

Abner Hersey, a curious compound <strong>of</strong> good sense and eccen-<br />

tricity.<br />

2d, at 26, she married, Oct. 21, 1744, John Russell, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Dr. John <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>. By him she had one son John, whose<br />

birth is not recorded. The father died Aug. 1, 1748, aged 24.<br />

The son was baptized Sept. 4, 1748, on the day his widowed<br />

mother was admitted to the East Church. He was captain <strong>of</strong> the<br />

marines on board the ill fated private armed ship Gen. Arnold,<br />

Capt. James Magee, lost in Plymouth Harbor Dec. 26, 1778, when<br />

nearly all on board perished. Though a strong, robust man, he<br />

was one <strong>of</strong> the first who perished. On his. monument in Plymouth<br />

church vard it is stated that'he was then 31, if &o, he was born<br />

in 1747.'<br />

3d, at 37, on the 9th <strong>of</strong> May, 1754, she became the second<br />

wife <strong>of</strong> John Sturgis, Esq., <strong>of</strong> <strong>Barnstable</strong>. By him she had Sarah,<br />

whose birth is recorded with sufBcient particularity, namely : at<br />

"3 1-2 o'clock A. M., Thursday, April 17, 1755, and baptized on<br />

the Sunday following;" and John baptized March 19, 1758.<br />

John Sturgis, Esq., died Aug. 10, 1759, aged 56.<br />

4th, at 44, she married, July 7, 1761, her relative, Hon.<br />

Daniel Davis, and again assumed her maiden name. By him she<br />

had one son, Daniel, born May 8, 1762.<br />

Her daughter Sarah married the late Mr. Isaiah Parker <strong>of</strong><br />

West <strong>Barnstable</strong>, had a family and lived to be aged. John was a<br />

graduate <strong>of</strong> Harvard College, and died early. Her son Daniel<br />

was Solieiter General, and a distinguished man. She survived all<br />

her husbands, but at last "the woman died also," namely : on the<br />

aged 87 years.<br />

Her son, Hon. Daniel Davis, married-Lois Freeman, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Constant Freeman, and sister <strong>of</strong> the Rev. James Freeman <strong>of</strong><br />

the Stone Chapel, Boston, and had a large family. Louisa, the<br />

eldest daughter, married William Minot, Esq., <strong>of</strong> Boston. Rear<br />

Admiral Charles Henry Davis, <strong>of</strong> the U. S. Navy, is his youngest<br />

son.<br />

(35-7) Capt. William Davis owned the house and estate<br />

which was his father's. He was a sea captain, and died in 1759,<br />

aged forty years.
