Anyone participating in the march had to commit themselves to nonvio-<br />

lence <strong>an</strong>d to not be armed on the march. Some local Blacks were not willing to<br />

make that commitment. As Hollis Watkins remembered, "some <strong>of</strong> the local<br />

brothers <strong>an</strong>d sisters said `I c<strong>an</strong>'t give up my stuff so I won't be on the march, I'll<br />

just be on the side ."' This arr<strong>an</strong>gement <strong>of</strong> armed byst<strong>an</strong>ders accomp<strong>an</strong>ying non-<br />

violent demonstrations were not isolated to Greenwood <strong>an</strong>d would become a<br />

common practice."<br />

Be<strong>for</strong>e reaching city hall as pl<strong>an</strong>ned, the marchers were met on the street<br />

by the mayor <strong>of</strong> Greenwood, Charles Sampson, twelve police <strong>of</strong>ficers, <strong>an</strong>d a<br />

Germ<strong>an</strong> shepherd. Sampson, a member <strong>of</strong> Greenwood's Citizen Council, ordered<br />

his <strong>of</strong>ficers to release the dog which dispersed the crowd after the c<strong>an</strong>ine bit one<br />

marcher <strong>an</strong>d shredded the p<strong>an</strong>ts leg <strong>of</strong> Moses . Form<strong>an</strong>, Moses, Peacock, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

SNCC activists Charles McLaurin, Fr<strong>an</strong>k Smith, Curtis Hayes, Bobby Talbert,<br />

Lafayette Surney, James Jones <strong>an</strong>d Lawrence Guyot were all arrested . <strong>The</strong> next<br />

day <strong>for</strong>ty people walked to the courthouse to attempt to register. <strong>The</strong>y were, as the<br />

day be<strong>for</strong>e, met by police <strong>an</strong>d attacked by police c<strong>an</strong>ine. <strong>The</strong>se actions <strong>an</strong>d their<br />

corresponding violent reaction did receive attention from the national media . <strong>The</strong><br />

national media attention <strong>for</strong>ced the Kennedy Administration to intervene to<br />

prevent the escalation <strong>of</strong> hostilities . Justice Department <strong>of</strong>ficials asked <strong>for</strong> a<br />

temporary restraining order to be imposed on city <strong>of</strong>ficials in Greenwood, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

directed local authorities to release incarcerated voter registration activists . ;'<br />

<strong>The</strong> following Wednesday, after the injunction, a small demonstration <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong>ty people was disrupted by local police <strong>of</strong>ficers . Nineteen <strong>of</strong> the marchers were<br />

arrested. During the initial confrontation between the marchers <strong>an</strong>d the police, one
