Black community to en<strong>for</strong>ce its decisions . For those in the Black community, who<br />

did not take seriously the edict <strong>of</strong> the NAACP <strong>an</strong>d the Natchez movement,<br />

Shields <strong>an</strong>d his squad would provide coercive violence as <strong>an</strong> incentive . Ed Cole<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered:<br />

Rudy just didn't appeal to folks (to support the boycott). . .He<br />

whipped them. He made it expensive. Folks go shop , beak the<br />

boycott, they didn't get home with the damn groceries . . .cause<br />

somebody was waiting <strong>for</strong> them when they got there .<br />

<strong>The</strong> movement considered breaking the boycott a serious <strong>of</strong>fense <strong>an</strong>d the violators<br />

had to be disciplined . With the s<strong>an</strong>ction'<strong>of</strong> the movement's leadership, Shield's<br />

.nd his team were committed to punishing the violators . As Evers stated "We<br />

didn't go around bragging about it, but we were ready to en<strong>for</strong>ce those boycotts,<br />

to die if necessary.""<br />

State <strong>an</strong>d local <strong>of</strong>ficials, law en<strong>for</strong>cement <strong>an</strong>d local press <strong>of</strong>ten stated the<br />

Deacons were responsible <strong>for</strong> the en<strong>for</strong>cement <strong>of</strong>boycotts . <strong>The</strong>re seems though to<br />

be a division <strong>of</strong> labor between the Deacons, who were solely responsible <strong>for</strong> the<br />

defense <strong>of</strong> the Black community <strong>an</strong>d the movement from external enemies, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

Shields en<strong>for</strong>cer squad, that was particularly responsible <strong>for</strong> harassing <strong>an</strong>d terror-<br />

izing Black people who violated the boycott. When asked if the Deacons en<strong>for</strong>ced<br />

boycotts, Natchez Deacon Charles Young responded "We had <strong>an</strong>other team out<br />

there . If you went in there (a white owned business) this time, after they (the<br />

en<strong>for</strong>cer squad) got through with you, you weren't hardly going back <strong>an</strong>y more.'`<br />

<strong>The</strong> Deacons <strong>an</strong>d the en<strong>for</strong>cer squad recruited different types <strong>of</strong> people <strong>for</strong><br />

each respective org<strong>an</strong>ization. <strong>The</strong> Deacons tended to be adult males over 30 year-.
