liberatory violence <strong>an</strong>d its effect on the personality <strong>of</strong> the colonized person . F<strong>an</strong>on<br />

asserted "At the level <strong>of</strong> individuals, violence is a cle<strong>an</strong>sing <strong>for</strong>ce . It frees the<br />

native from his inferiority complex <strong>an</strong>d from his despair <strong>an</strong>d inaction ; it makes<br />

him fearless <strong>an</strong>d restores his self-respect ." , In communities like C<strong>an</strong>ton, where <strong>an</strong><br />

inspirational "Bad Negro" like C.O . Chinn supported the Movement, other Blacks<br />

were moved to support it through <strong>of</strong>fering themselves as to protect COFO work-<br />

ers. In other communities, like Natchez, Blacks were moved to challenge white<br />

supremacy through joining the Deacons or other <strong>for</strong>ms <strong>of</strong> armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce after<br />

<strong>an</strong> act <strong>of</strong> racist terrorism (e .g. the bombing attack on George Metcalf) . In these<br />

inst<strong>an</strong>ces, individuals consciously decided to sacrifice themselves <strong>an</strong>d to chal-<br />

lenge their personal fear to support the Movement. As other Blacks beg<strong>an</strong> to see<br />

their fathers, uncles, brothers, mothers, aunts, sisters <strong>an</strong>d neighbors pick up<br />

weapons to defend the Black community <strong>an</strong>d the Movement, fear was overcome<br />

<strong>an</strong>d confidence in Black hum<strong>an</strong>ity was increased.<br />

Equally import<strong>an</strong>t, white supremacists were challenged by open Black<br />

defi<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d armed resist<strong>an</strong>ce . Fear <strong>an</strong>d intimidation were major instruments in<br />

the system <strong>of</strong> segregation. Not only did white supremacist terrorism create fear in<br />

Black people, but their submission to this system allowed white racists to be<br />

openly arrog<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d haughty in their "superiority." Confronting better org<strong>an</strong>ized<br />

<strong>an</strong>d more numerous Blacks with guns upset the environment which allowed white<br />

supremacists to act with such insolence <strong>an</strong>d open disrespect . In turn, due to armed<br />

resist<strong>an</strong>ce, fear <strong>of</strong> Black rebellion <strong>an</strong>d retaliation beg<strong>an</strong> to increase in the white<br />

community. This proved to be a great weapon, not only winning concessions from
