Black communities in the days <strong>of</strong> segregation . Hopefully, this study will aid in<br />

constructing the full spectrum <strong>of</strong> responses to oppression <strong>an</strong>d white supremacy in<br />

the United States <strong>an</strong>d in the Americ<strong>an</strong> South <strong>an</strong>d give voice to Movement partici-<br />

p<strong>an</strong>ts underrepresented in Movement literature <strong>an</strong>d media accounts <strong>of</strong> Movement<br />

history.<br />

Finally I hope that this project leads to the initiation <strong>of</strong> other works by<br />

other researchers in other southern states to identify commonalities <strong>an</strong>d differ-<br />

ences with the Mississippi freedom movement . Several <strong>of</strong> the communities <strong>an</strong>d<br />

individuals mentioned in this work could be the focus <strong>of</strong> future scholarship .<br />

Hopefully, <strong>Eye</strong> <strong>for</strong> An <strong>Eye</strong> will spark new discussions, new ideas, <strong>an</strong>d new<br />

focuses that will raise our underst<strong>an</strong>ding <strong>an</strong>d create a more inclusive historiogra-<br />

phy . This is the challenge <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong>y generation <strong>of</strong> scholars. Let us leave the next<br />

generation with new challenges <strong>an</strong>d broader <strong>an</strong>d more sophisticated underst<strong>an</strong>d-<br />

ing <strong>of</strong> the past .<br />
